As we are frequently asked by anglers but also by retailers how rod actions stated in lbs can be converted into a casting weight in gram, we are now finally going to explain this convertion in detail.

The test curve is set up by horizontally fixing the handle section and then weighting the tip of the rod until it bents down in a 90 degrees angle. The statement of the accordingly necessary weight thereby traditionally is made in English pounds, shortend lbs, which is equal to 454,4 g and which consists of 16 ounces of 28,4 g each. The transformation from the lbs test curve to the ideal casting weight in gram is made by multiplying the test curve by the weight of 1 ounce = 28,4 g. The effective casting weight range at lighter rods is then settled at approx. +/- 10 % of the ideal casting weight and at heavier rods it then ranges up to approx. +/- 15 %.

  • Up to a test curve of 3,50 lbs usually only monofilament lines are used.
  • Rods from 4,00 – 5,00 lbs are then also frequently used as spod rods for precisely casting heavy feeder baskets and rockets. Due to these heavy loads sometimes tapered surf lines or braided lines are being used. Braided lines are also frequently used for predator fishing with such rods.
  • From 6,00 lbs on such rods are exclusively used as catfish rods with a standard of braided lines.

Attention: This way of transferring a lbs test curve into a gram casting weight is only suitable for freshwater rods!
